October #1: Effective Policy Management, Upcoming Trainings, Slip & Fall Grant

Well-written policies are crucial to creating an efficient, safe, and productive workplace. They do this by:
- Defining acceptable and unacceptable behavior.
- Ensuring legal compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
- Fostering an ethical and equitable workplace where everyone is treated fairly.
- Providing guidelines for a safe workplace.
- Reducing the risk of security breaches.
- Justifying administrative actions such as employee suspensions or removals.
In addition to having policies in place, part of an effective policy management program includes regular communication with all employees. At each new-hire orientation you should review the content of each policy and have your new or returning employees sign each policy. You should also have an annual policy review with all employees and have all policies signed by each employee at each review.
Consistent policy compliance is important, and supervisors should attend policy compliance training on a regular basis to ensure they are enforcing policies fairly among all of their direct reports. Even the strongest policy relies entirely on consistent enforcement. In addition, human resources or your organization leadership should regularly review policies to ensure they are up to date and reflect the needs of your organization. If you change a current policy or implement new policies, review them with your organization’s attorney prior to communicating them to your workforce.
By maintaining this continuous cycle of review and communication, you ensure your organization remains equitable, compliant, and protected.
