It’s that time of year again! Time to welcome — and in some cases welcome back — your seasonal employees for the upcoming summer recreation season. We cannot overstate the importance of ensuring all employees, new and returning, attend the seasonal employee orientation each year. The orientation should be worthwhile and provide valuable information about your organization, expectations (yours and theirs), benefits, policies, and anything else that may be considered important to your organization.
Things to consider:
- Even if a seasonal employee has returned year after year, having them attend the orientation ensures important information is shared with them at the same time as the new seasonal employees.
- Returning employees can become complacent and take shortcuts or fail to follow policy.
- New policies relating to safety or other areas could have been implemented while these employees were not working. Ensure you point out these changes to all employees during orientation.
- Should you need to take disciplinary action against an employee, the action is more defensible if the employee has heard the policy or policies they violated each year, rather than once years ago.
While it may seem redundant, having returning seasonal employees attend orientation each year is a best practice that helps create a safe and enjoyable environment for all employees and members of the public.
