Public officials across Iowa are grappling with the challenge of maintaining quality services with fewer resources. With tighter budgets and smaller staffs, many cities and counties now must deliver the same services with less support than in previous years. This strain has a direct impact on employee well-being. Overworked teams in departments such as public works, parks, utilities, and emergency services face heightened risks for injury, burnout, and turnover.

For many cities and counties, especially those without a dedicated HR department, the burden of protecting staff falls on city administrators, clerks, county auditors and department heads, who already juggle many responsibilities. Despite the limited resources, there are practical strategies available to protect employees, enhance safety, and foster a supportive work culture.

Join us at the Iowa League of Cities Annual Conference & Exhibit, September 17-19, as we continue this conversation with a panel featuring the city of Perry and Clinton. We’ll share real examples, explore challenges, and brainstorm together. Bring your questions, your ideas, and your experience – we’re all in this together.

Members with completed audits can access their electronic annual audit report and final audit premium schedule through the Member portal. IMWCA will continue to make the audit reports available online as we receive them from Information Providers Inc. An email will be sent to the primary IMWCA contact stating that the audit documents are now available. IMWCA members and agents will access the documents by using their individual sign-in.

Each member has 30 days to review the audit. The 30-day period begins on the day the member receives an email that their report is available online.

Audit invoices and refunds will still arrive via postal mail. If no audit documents are available or you need to request changes, please contact Andrew Justice at andrewjustice@iowaleague.org or (800) 257-2708.

The State of Iowa implemented a new law (SF 22) on July 1, 2025, that prohibits the use of electronic communications devices while driving unless they are used in hands-free or voice-activated modes. There are a limited number of exemptions for certain local government activities. These include employees of public safety agencies or health care professionals acting in the course of an emergency.
